Choosing Joy: A Mommy & Me Day of Love

Shalonda woke up before the sun, in that soft blue hour when the world feels quiet and safe. At 32, she had mastered the art of moving gently through the morning coffee brewing, affirmations whispering in her spirit, gratitude settling in her chest.
Her two greatest blessings were still asleep down the hall.
Kandi, 10 years old, already stretching into her independence but still her mama’s twin in heart.
Nyla, 9 years old, tender and thoughtful, with a smile that could calm storms.
Shalonda paused at their bedroom door and watched them for a moment. Thank You, God, she whispered. In a world that felt loud lately news, school pressures, world conversations they were starting to overhear she could see the way her girls were learning about things she wished they didn’t have to yet. And that was exactly why today mattered.
She tiptoed in and sang softly, “Good moooorning, my little goddesses.”
Kandi rolled over dramatically. “Mommy… it’s Saturday.”
Nyla peeked one eye open. “Is it a cleaning day?”
Shalonda laughed. “Nope. It’s a ‘put on something cute and trust your mama’ kind of day.”
That got them up.
An hour later, the three of them were pulling up to Mona’s, the coziest breakfast spot in Davisville. The smell of syrup and butter wrapped around them the second they walked in.
“Wait… we’re eating out?” Kandi gasped.
“For real for real?” Nyla added.
“For real for real,” Shalonda said, sliding into the booth.
They ordered fluffy pancakes, cheesy eggs, beef bacon, and strawberry lemonade. The girls talked over each other about school stories and TikTok dances they weren’t allowed to post yet but definitely practiced in secret. Syrup dripped. Laughter spilled. Shalonda watched their faces more than she ate her food.
That right there that glow, those giggles that was her why.
After breakfast, she drove them to their next surprise.
“A spa?” Nyla’s eyes grew wide.
“A mommy and me spa?” Kandi squealed.
“Yes ma’am,” Shalonda said, smiling. “Because goddesses take care of themselves.”
Soft robes. Warm foot soaks. Gentle music floating through the air. For a few hours, the world quieted. No homework. No emails. No heavy conversations. Just warm towels, cucumbers on eyes, and shared whispers.
Kandi leaned over during their facials. “Mommy, are we rich?”
Shalonda chuckled. “Baby, we are rich in love. That’s the best kind.”
Nyla reached for her hand. “I like when it’s just us.”
Shalonda squeezed both their fingers. “It’s always us. Always.”
As evening came, they pulled up to a luxury hotel downtown. The girls’ mouths dropped open at the tall glass windows and sparkling chandeliers.
“We’re staying here?” Kandi asked.
“For the night,” Shalonda confirmed.
They jumped on the plush beds, ordered room service, and watched movies until their eyes got heavy. Later, when the girls were asleep Nyla curled into her side, Kandi’s arm thrown across her waist Shalonda stared at the ceiling and let her thoughts settle.
The world might be unpredictable. Work might be demanding. The noise outside might grow louder as her daughters grow older.
But inside their little circle, there was peace.
Everything she did every early morning, every late-night bill paid, every sacrifice was for them. Because in this big, wild, sometimes overwhelming world, they were each other’s safe place.
She kissed their foreheads softly.
“My beautiful girls,” she whispered. “We’re going to keep choosing joy.”
And wrapped in hotel sheets and unconditional love, they slept deeply three hearts beating in rhythm, stronger together than anything the world could bring.
