Later that night the backyard glowed with string lights and laughter.
Music played softly while everyone gathered around the patio table piled high with food.
Desmond brought out another tray of ribs.
Jay clapped his hands.
“Ladies and gentlemen… the man has outdone himself.”
Ashley tasted one and shook her head.
“Okay Desmond… I’m mad.”
“Why?”
“You been married ten years and Naomi never told us you could cook like this.”
Naomi laughed.
“Because he couldn’t!”
Desmond pointed the tongs like a microphone.
“I would like to thank chemo for forcing me to learn.”
Everyone laughed.
Then Brandon said,
“Man… cooking is the real sign of love. When a brother stands at a grill sweating for hours, that’s commitment.”
Jerilyn nodded.
“Facts. If a man burns his eyebrows off for you, he loves you.”
After dinner the group moved to the fire pit.
The mood softened.
Ashley looked at Naomi gently.
“You scared us, you know.”
Naomi nodded.
“I was scared too.”
She took a breath.
“Losing my hair… losing my breasts… sometimes I felt like I was losing myself.”
Desmond reached for her hand.
Ashley leaned forward.
“Girl… you didn’t lose anything.”
Jerilyn added,
“You gained a testimony.”
Jay nodded.
“And a husband who apparently grills like a prophet.”
Desmond raised an eyebrow.
“I receive that.”
Everyone laughed.
Naomi looked at Desmond.
“Why did you do all this?”
Desmond stared into the fire for a moment.
Then he spoke quietly.
“When we got married, the pastor said for better or worse.”
He shrugged.
“Well… this was the worse part.”
Naomi squeezed his hand.
“But look at you,” he continued, smiling at her. “Still beautiful. Still strong. Still bossing me around.”
“Someone has to.”
Ashley laughed.
“That’s right.”
Desmond stood and lifted his glass.
“I want to say something.”
Everyone grew quiet.
“You know… cancer tried to take my wife’s body.”
He looked at Naomi.
“But it never touched her spirit.”
Naomi wiped her eyes.
“And if anyone here is struggling with something… remember this.”
He pointed at the table full of family.
“You’re never fighting alone.”
Jay nodded.
“That’s real.”
Brandon added,
“Family is God’s way of saying you got backup.”
Jerilyn smiled at Naomi.
“And girl… we got you for life.”
Ashley raised her glass.
“To Naomi.”
Everyone echoed:
“To Naomi!”
Naomi looked around the circle.
Her sisters.
Their husbands.
Her husband.
The laughter.
The love.
And she smiled brighter than she had in months.
She whispered softly,
“I thought cancer took something from me.”
Desmond kissed her temple.
“Nah.”
He grinned.
“It just showed you how strong you already were.”
The fire crackled.
The night filled with laughter again.
And Naomi realized something beautiful:
Cancer had changed her body.
But it had also revealed something stronger than fear.
Family.
Faith.
And a love that refuses to quit.
